those little town blues are fading away

oh my gaaaaaaawddddddd! where do i even begin to describe new york city?
i had such an amazing trip, i fell completely in love with the city and just the whole drama and constant action of "the city that never sleeps"

so many memories. i'm gonna' hit up a list of stuff i did and saw when my minds a bit less distracted with a sore throat! here's some of the snaps i've already edited :)

...oh and i'm already counting down the days now 'til arillas. i'm so greedy with holidays, i just don't really enjoy coming back to england at alllll, major episodes of post holiday depression hahaa
and my first hostel experience has got me in the mood for backpacking big timeee, i need a map and someone to hit europe with me please!

my lecturer didn't turn up today.
it's fine because it's not like i pay over 3 grand to be taught by them.
oh no, sorry i do, do that.

but it gave me an extra hour to have a browse of some design websites.
i came across the work of ji lee and i have literally just spent about an hour looking at all his work. (www.pleaseenjoy.com)
-my favourites are his bubble project which i think is an amazing concept for graphic communication.
-his branding for New Museum in New York - the spilling paint was a really good idea for attracting attention
and finally his typography in the form of images are such simple forms of genius.

i got this weeks letter from mum today too. i love the snippets and weekly postcards :)
right now i should be doing laundry so that i actually have clothes to start packing tonight
but the words "maybe later" keep springing to mind!

the september issue

i've just watched the film documentary "the september issue" over lunch.
oh my gosh, it's my dream world, i'd really really really love to work on the creative department for a fashion magazine.
vogue at times looks too scary and overwhelming, but honestly, it would be my dream job.

i loved grace coddington's 20's inspired shoot and totally disagreed with anna wintour's decision to cut the first double spread of the shoot.
although anna wintour is an absolute fashion icon.

i'm gonna' get going on my graphic design work now.
gotta get fighting so that i can reach that dream world!

rankin

i've been doing some photographer research for an essay i need to write over easter.
i'm so hyped now though i might just write it now.
although i can't decide who to do it on.
it's either tim bret day, who's advertising campaign photography is amazing
or rankin who is literally unbelievable at portraits.
this photograph of sienna miller is possibly my favourite.

when left to do design work all day, i think i go a little bit inspiration crazy.
Bx
the sartorialist is amazing for unique fashion photography.
its been one of my favourite blogs for absolutely ages.

& the suns still shining. i can't wait to only have to care about which pub we're going for chilled out afternoon drinks in. or which book would be the best read by the pool.

but at the moment it's literally only days until i hit new york
and i think it's gonna' be pretty chilly.
i guess thats a sacrifice i'm more than happy making to be one of the best cities in the world.

eeeee! Bx

"There were days I thought I would die, until i heard you talk about the magic"

inspiring my work this week:

o1." a little princess"
just remembered about this diamond of a film. i love it, brings back memories from childhood but it's such a beautiful story. some parts are so sad, and the acting by the main girl is well overplayed at times, but it's so inspiring.
theres themes of indian magic, princesses, the mystery of soldiers lost in battle, the whole class system, romance and just the bond between a father and her daughter. i love it, sometimes its so much more enjoyable watching old films rather than over-hyped current ones.

o2. sunshine and the promise of summer
the suns been out loads this week. it's not that warm yet, but its amazing how much it can put you in a better mood. it's getting me really excited for summer 2010, corfu, lots of chilling out and hopefully lots of design. i can't wait for the smell of suntan lotion, deciding which bikini would be best for the pool and taking trips to the park, no matter how old we are now.

o3. spending the day with mum on thursday
loved it! we didn't get up to that much, mainly things that needed to be done, like sort out all my finances and a big food shop! i got all my dollars sorted out for my trip to NY soon which got me so excited that i had to put up my brooklyn bridge poster in my room that has been waiting to be done for months. i decorated it with photographs from my last visit -some amazing architecture shots and the standard yellow cab shots! i still really need to research what i wanna' do and where i want to visit, because i want to cram in as much hopefully inspiring visits on the trip as i can to help my work. i can't distract myself too much anyway - i wont be able to drink, boooo!

04. road trippp to lancaster
we went on a bit of a road trip to lancaster on friday night. the sat nav took us a well long way round but it was nice to see a few new places. it felt really strange to be back in the countryside with sheep and cows etc. we went to a headphone club night too, which was odd at first but we got into it and had a really fun night out. the moors we drove through on the way back were really inspiring as well, it makes you remember theres loads of just empty space out there. land that you could literally get lost in -how dark. and then there was a house too, just in the middle of areas of motorway lanes, such an odd location for a house, or such a inconsiderate place to build a motorway?

05. typography
i'm coming to the end of my first typography project on my course. but really i have gotten so interested and caught up in the study of it. i keep noticing it everywhere and although i wish i had been given a much more modern and workable font, i have fallen a little bit for bodoni. i keep noticing it in places and get really geeky with pointing it out. i'm gonna' carry on investigating and studying typefaces because i think theres so much as a designer that i can still get out of it.

-
i'm trying to make this blog a bit more formal and interesting.
i think as a designer i should make it more about my inspirations and work rather than informal rants and raves about life. but hey, i can't guarantee that won't slip in ;) haha
here's to a new chapter of hey,fox.

wednesday.

"what type of drunk are you?"
"constant"
JOHNNY DEPP

i'm gonna' really work on this blog. this week i've been hooked on design based blogs, with fashion and typography as my main points of interest. so many things are inspiring, i should be using this to write and document them. maybe even to display some of my work?

i've gained so much inspriation from: http://llymlrs.blogspot.com, i've been hooked on reading through all the posts - her moleskine work is incredible and she seems to be more or less at the same stage of her design as i am so that's really interesting to read about.
i need to raise my game.

oh and i've had a think & i really wanna' get some creative industry work experience over the summer so once i'm back from NYC i'm gonna' get on the case. even just a day in a magazine agency would be so amazing, or maybe even just go and visit some design agencies?

i had a really good night last night. apart from the bartender taxing a fiver from me and nearly not even getting in 'cos my photo's definately not me.. nor is my student id.. or my signature.
also, if anyones reading this (?!) and haven't already done so. please search "find matthew wilcox" on facebook and help with any information. my thoughts are with his friends and family, i really do hope they find him safe and well.

tonight, i think i'm off out for another wednesday cinema outing :)
then tomorrow i'm so excited for a day with mum. gonna' get my $$$ for americaaa!
wooo, i need to get on researching some galleries and stuff too.

sheffield and sun.

i'm back after a very funny weekend with one of my best friend's from back home.
i loved visiting her at uni, we've had some wicked nights out back home in leics, but theres something about uni life that makes us have more fun :) it was such a funny weekend.

friday; we had a catch up, went for a yummy starbucks coffee.
i'm addicted to caramel machiatos (spelling?) at the moment. it doesn't help that you can buy them up in the cafe in my student union.
then we came back, had some food, got ourselves glammed up and had a night out in "propaganda".
some very strange coincidences occurred, hehee and we met some "firefighters" ...as if? idiots!
and a swedish guy and all his mates haha.
lets just say he wasn't exactly dancing to impress?

saturday; we slept. got up and had something to eat. watched "boy in the striped pyjamas" but fell asleep before it got to the bit that makes you cry -thank godd! then slept. then ate again - a yummy chinese take-away haha! then we toddled off out again, after a few cheeky drinking games to "sheff-one"
by another strange coincidence we bumped into swedish guy and his mates again! who knows whether they had a clue what we were going on about. "we never met you" ...as if.
haaaa!
then after some cheesy chips we called it a night again.
not gonna' lie, i don't think my liver was happy with me at all! (being the third night in a row. oh!)

sunday; got up at 12. well later than i expected to! had a cheeky mcdonalds, well when i say cheeky i mean the biggest, most mcdonalds i have ever eaten in my entire life.
i didn't realise we could get a free burger with a meal with our student cards!
then got the train home :)

such a good time. some hilarious quotes to go with it too...
"i've probably damaged it from swimming or horse riding"
"so do you ever get called ikea? ...are you gonna' order swedish meatballs?"
"do you want cheesy chips? WHY HAVE I GOT THESE?!"
hehehee good times. ♥

since ive got back i've been really busy with uni work.
i'm trying really hard, because the results from last term, i'm really proud of and want to carry that on.
i had the longest sleep on sunday night and i felt so better for it. i don't think i've been to bed that early in about a year. i'm gonna' try and do it more often, although probably won't last too long haha.

and it's been really sunny the last couple of days. not baking hot or anything just sunny, which immediately makes everyone feel better. i love it. i can't wait for the summer :)

right... bit of an essay, instead of the one i should be writing about "patterns and culture"
whoooops.
gonna' get to it. Bx
